Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & DG (ICAR) chaired a Virtual Meeting on 3rd & 4th February, 2021 to review the progress of Agricultural R&D activities of CG Centres under ICAR-CGIAR collaborative approved Work Plans for the calendar Year - 2020.
India is a member country of the CGIAR system and also a voting member in the CGICAR System Council. India’s role in the CGIAR has been appreciated by the global communities. The partnership between DARE/ICAR and the CGIAR system dates back to 1974. So far, ICAR has developed strong working linkages with 12 CG Centres in the areas of crops, livestock, fisheries, policy, land & water management, agro-biodiversity, etc. The CGIAR system has contributed significantly in supplying genetic material of different crops from various parts of the world which has been utilized for breeding of new and improved varieties.
The DARE/ICAR works with IRRI, CIMMYT, ICARDA, ICRISAT, ICRAF, IFPRI, ILRI, WFC, IWMI, CIP, Biodiversity International & CIAT through mutually agreed work plans on various issues of enhancing and sustaining agricultural productivity and also on strategic research areas including climate resilience in agriculture through optimization of natural resources. In the meeting, all the CGIAR Centres presented their activities and details of progress thereof. Special emphasis was given to the future activities and working modules to take agri-R&D further to meet our aspirations. The deliberations during the meeting will further strengthen ties with CGIAR Centres and address the the needs of agricultural stakeholders.
Additional Secretary (DARE) & Secretary (ICAR); Deputy Directors General, ICAR; ADGs, Senior Officials of DARE/ICAR Hqrs. and Directors of ICAR Institutes, Vice-Chancellors of some SAUs also joined the meeting. From CGIAR Centres, DG, ICRISAT; Country Representatives/Directors of CG Centres in India and other partners in the research programmes joined the meeting. A total of about 144 delegates participated in the two-day meeting.

Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) inaugurated the “International Seminar on Climate Smart Farming Systems” for Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) countries at the National Agricultural Science Centre Complex, New Delhi today. The Seminar is being organized by the Department of Agricultural Research & Education, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmer’s Welfare, Government of India and Indian Council of Agricultural Research from 11th to 13th December, 2019.
In his inaugural address, Dr. Mohapatra emphasized that despite climate changes, the farmers’ income can be enhanced effectively by adopting the technological interventions. He stated that the small holding farming is a challenge while applying the farm mechanization technology as a component of climate resilient agriculture. He asserted that India is committed to define the targets for reducing the emissions, to develop technologies and implement those at the ground level in order to mitigate and also adapt to the situations which are fast emerging and challenging the production systems. The Director General accentuated that India is also committed to strengthening the relationships among the BIMSTEC countries.
Shri Han Thein Kyaw, Director, BIMSTEC Secretariat, Myanmar urged the farmers to adopt the modern technologies in farming and agriculture I accordance with the changing climate scenario in the world. This would help to maintain the nutritional quality of the crops and food products.
Shri Virander Paul, Joint Secretary, BIMSTEC, SAARC & NALANADA, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India accentuated on having prompt regional connectivity and trade to be key to success for the BIMSTEC countries. Shri Paul regarded the agriculture to be one of the most important factors for the economic development of a country.
Shri Sushil Kumar, Additional Secretary (DARE) & Secretary (ICAR) along with other senior officials of ICAR and DARE were also present during the occasion.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr. A. Arunachalam, ADG (International Relations), ICAR highlighted the main objectives of the Seminar.
The participants from all the 7 BIMSTEC Countries, viz., Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and BIMSTEC Secretariat are attending the International Seminar.
The seminar has been organized as a Government of India initiative for organizing the “International Seminar on Climate Smart Farming Systems” for BIMSTEC countries as was announced by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India at the 4th BIMSTEC Summit held at Kathmandu from 30th to 31st August, 2019.
The main objective of the International Seminar is to promote experience sharing for enabling the improvement of tropical smallholder farming systems for greater productivity and resilience to climate change through ecological approaches.

Shri Kailash Choudhary, Union Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare participated in the “5th ASEAN-India Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry” held at Brunei Darussalam today.
Shri Choudhary highlighted that India is committed to the principle and objectives to ensure the welfare and the quality of life in the ASEAN Regions by ensuring the strategic cooperation in the areas of agriculture and allied sectors. He stated that the agriculture and food security remain among the priority issues of the Government of India with the key objective of ensuring food and nutrition security at affordable price in an eco-friendly environment.The Minister accentuated that the agriculture is particularly important as a majority of the population in the country is still dependent upon it for earning their livelihood. In this direction, India has developed around 35 biofortified crop varieties that are rich in vitamins, iron, zinc, etc.
He outlined that India has paved the way for self-sufficiency in food and milk production through the Green Revolution and White Revolution during the past decades. Shri Choudhary also underlined the role of the National Agricultural Research System led by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
He emphasized on the Government of India’s main aim and objective to fulfil the goal of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi of doubling the farmer’s income by the Year - 2022. Shri Choudhary also highlighted about the various advancements made in the agricultural and farming technologies in the country.
During the meeting, both the sides mutually committed to focus on the development and implementation of the four priority projects for the Year - 2020, namely Climate-Smart Agriculture, Application of Robotics and Drones in agriculture production and electromagnetic waves in food processing, Promotion of Post-Harvest Technology for fruits and vegetables and Trans-Boundary Diseases and Health Management for crops, livestock and aquaculture.
