Union Agriculture Minister Emphasized Conservation of Indigenous Fish Diversity

Shri Radha Mohan Singh, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare visited Allahabad Regional Centre of ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute today.

In his interaction with the scientists and staff, he stressed upon to work out feasible methods for effective conservation of valuable indigenous fish diversity and fishery and control on rapid invasion of the resilient exotic fishes in the major rivers. He appreciated the ongoing works of the Centre on open water fisheries resources of the region, demonstration and up-scaling of pens for fish yield enhancement from wetlands and new initiatives on conservation and restoration of valuable sensitive fish species of the river Ganga under National Mission on Clean Ganga (NMCG) project.

Dr. K.D. Joshi, Head of the Centre briefed about significant achievements and major ongoing activities of the Centre. Dr. Joshi also briefed about the findings of projects completed by the Centre on environmental flow studies, aquatic impact assessment and impacts of river modifications on fish diversity and composition.

Dr. U.S. Gautam, Director, ATARI, Kanpur was also present during the visit.
