ICAR played important role in improving food grains production in India — Radha Mohan Singh
89th Foundation day and Prize Distribution Ceremony
Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shri Radha Mohan Singh, addressed the people on the occasion of 89th Foundation Day of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Annual Award ceremony. Shri Singh said that agricultural scientists have played a significant role in the development of agriculture in India by bringing green revolution and subsequently by the development of research and technology.
The agriculture minister said that since 1951, there has been an increase of 5x in foodgrain production in the country, 14.3 times in fish production, 9.6 times in milk production, and 47.5 times increase in egg production. In the horticulture sector, three times increase in fruits and vegetables production has been achieved as compared to 1991-92. This type of development had a direct effect on the nation's food and nutritional security. The scientists have also played an important role in furthering excellence in higher agricultural education. Our scientists are engaged in innovative areas of science and technology development, and they are appreciated at the international level in their subject areas. Shri Sudarshan Bhagat, Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare also graced the ceremony.
Chief Guest and dignitaries released ICAR publications, knowledge products and technologies on the occasion.
Twenty-two awards were distributed for excellence in 19 different categories in the award distribution function, which include 3 institutes; 2 AICRPs; 12 Krishi Vigyan Kendras; 19 farmers in which 3 are women farmers; 80 scientists including 30 women. The agriculture minister congratulated the three Best Ranked Universities and Official Language Awardees and other award winners for outstanding achievements and contributions.
Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra , Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) , in his welcome address briefed about the achievements of ICAR.
